We were supposed to fly to two different places with Kamila and Tomek, before they bought the tickets to Tel Aviv. It’s not a secret – we were happy, because it’s a country which is rather exotic, controversial and orthodox, so we knew that it would have a huge influence on us and the pictures we would take. On the other hand, we had some anxieties – bombings, cultures, religions etc. Well, maybe not anxieties but definitely some concerns.
Luckily, Israel is the second, or actually the first home for the company that Kamila works for, so we could feel more at home than tourists. Right after landing in Tel Aviv, Ron, our guide (and a brilliant guy, by the way), took care of us, put us all into his golden Vogue and during those several days he showed the most beautiful parts of Palestine. He took care of everything and made the impossible possible – without him we would have completed maybe 5 % of our plan.
What do we know now? It’s a beautiful, wonderful country. One of the most beautiful countries we have ever been to. It’s full of cultural extremes, full of orthodox religions of the world. Also, it’s full up to the brim with war and the hidden atmosphere of threats.
The Dead Sea (the deepest depression in the world, 400 metres below sea level) and the surrounding desert are by far the most amazing areas of the country. Abandoned, deserted, very, very beautiful and with an atmosphere. On the other hand, Jerusalem is where millions of people are mainly coming to pray in the first place. The city is like an enormous church. According to the Bible, this location is closely related to Jesus Christ, and virtually wherever he was (where he wept, where the went through, where he died) a temple was built. Through the streets of this city, Jesus used to carry his cross so here is where the real Way of the Cross is. It’s here also where Jews have their own sacred places, where they have their Western Wall – the most sacred place for Judaism. You’ve got to remember that for centuries Jerusalem belonged to Palestine, and it is still inhabited by Armenians too. A melting pot? As hell!
It wasn’t easy when it came to photographing. It was probably the most difficult photo shoot that we’d had. Really, you could go there and come back with no single picture. Israel is overwhelming with its charm and it’s not easy not to point in all directions and take ultra-wide-angle frames, even when I was telling myself that I’m doing something incredibly stupid. The displays in our cameras were constantly fogging up as we were taking pictures with our mouth wide open…
For the first time, we were shooting with new equipment – Micro 4/3 – Olympus OM-D E-M1 and a bunch of lenses. Actually, almost the whole video of this trip we filmed using this camera. (...). Not long ago, on Facebook, someone asked “Why so quiet?”. I answered that we were earning our livelihood. It sounded like a joke, but in fact it wasn’t – we were doing something about our budget :) Hence, amongst other things, on Valentine’s Day we landed in Krakow for the wedding of Ola and Slawek. It was an exceptional, small and intimate ceremony, exclusively for the closest family. For us, this was a challenge, as we wanted to make a reportage no worse than usual, but the time we had was very short, unusually short – we finished photographing at 4pm! Here on the blog, we have deliberately omitted pictures of the reception, but it was a family event, so let it stay that way. However, if everything works out well, we’ll still go to some beautiful far-off place. Cross your fingers! :)
This year we will try to sow something new and we want to introduce OM-D to our wedding reportage portfolio. This reportage was the first time that the Olympus E-M1 was completely and seriously worked shoulder to shoulder with full frames. We approached this still with some ‘reserve’, but there came a moment when I felt surer using the OM-D than the D700 and 70-200 VR II, and I only went back tot he bigger camera when I didn’t feel sure about the Olympus. As it turned out, wrongly. For now on, with each new reportage, we are going to take more and more pictures with this camera. It’s wonderful.
I mentioned also about the yellow-red-blue equipment revolution. The blue part is Olympus. The red is Canon, from which we have completely resigned as of the end of January. This is due to the Nikkor 58mm 1.4G (we love it after all!), which made the Can 50mmf/1.2L suddenly stop taking pictures…. As soon as we dig ourselves out of this work, I’ll try to write something about this, as this is not the first thing that has surprised us in A.D. 2014 :) Fotografia ślubna Warszawa, zdjęcia ślubne Warszawa, wedding photography Warsaw, wedding photographer Warsaw.
